It is often said that university should realize the half price tuition fee. However, I think the idea is good but it seems little impossible to realize that. This is because university would not easily reduce the tuition fee. If they so, in order to reduce tuition fee, government would support more money. And, it would come to us as a pressure of tax. As I mentioned before, I also feel tuition fee in Korea is too much. So, the solutions to reduce pressure of paying tuition fee are reducing interest rates of student loan and removing insolvent universities.

First, the interest rate of student loan should be reduced. This is because many of students have worries after they rent money. Government actually gives waiver to poor people. But, the problem is the standard of poor people is unclear and the tuition fee and interest rate are still big money for normal income families. For example, if government gives waiver to all university students. They do not need to worry about fronted tuition fee, so they can more focus on their studies. Of course they have returned the money back after they get a job.

Second, insolvent universities should be disappeared. This is because many of universities are not providing proper educational service comparing the amount of money that they ask student to pay. For instance, I saw some news saying about some university’s head person hided school foundation money. Even after the news, students apply to the university after Korean SAT. In order to prevent possible suffer, government should monitor often, and once they find wrong university, they should stop the university.

To sum up, in order to reduce pressure of tuition fee for students, government should try harder to solve this problem.

Woman only car in the subway

It is often said that woman only car in the subway is not necessary. However, I think subway should have woman only car, especially in the rush hour for these two reasons; it can prevent possible sexual harassment and it gives better atmosphere for both men and women.

First of all, it can reduce possible sexual harassment in the subway. Also, it is important to remove the chance to commit sexual harassment from guy. This is because most of woman do not say anything even though they got sexual harassment in the subway because they are afraid about saying that and get focused by the crowd. According to the subway conducted by Korean government, almost more than 50% women got sexual harassment more than one time in the subway. Among them, 30% of women could say anything to the one who did sexual harassment to that woman. This study shows removing any chance to commit sexual harassment is really necessary and woman only car could be one of solutions for that.

Also, it gives better subway condition to men and women both. This is because woman only car can reduce misconception happening in the subway in the rush hour from both gender. For example, if there are too many people in the subway, it sometimes happens that a guy touches a girl’s body by accidentally or opposite. So, they have to more care about their position not to touch other’s bodies in the subway. However, it there are only woman in the subway, woman can feel much safe and comfortable with not worrying about somebody touching her body. Also, for guy, if there is no woman in the car that they ride in, they can move much freely.

To sum up, woman only car is necessary not only for woman but also for man for reducing sexual harassment and making comfortable subway. Actually, the best solution of reducing sexual crimes in the subway is enhancing seriousness of sexual harassment to guy who commits sexual harassment. They should feel shame by themselves. Also, woman who got the crimes should not feel guilty about that. They have to have more confident that they are not wrong, and should say he did sexual harassment to me loudly.

Marijuana use in Korea

In Korea it is common conception that marijuana is really bad, so it should be kept in illegal. However, I cast a doubt to the idea. I think marijuana should be legalized for these two reasons. Marijuana is not that harmful, and government can make money.

First of all, marijuana is less harmful than we think. Since Korea government categorized marijuana as a drug, the one of misconception in Korea is that marijuana is as harmful as heroin or cocaine. However, it is not true. According to study conducted by UK, marijuana is actually less harmful than cigarette and alcohol to our bodies. Now in Korea, alcohol and cigarette are legal even though they are more dangerous. It the reason why we legalized those of substance, alcohol and cigarette is to reduce people’s stress, marijuana would be better for that. Think about other those two substances. Cigarette is defiantly dangerous and addictive. My father smokes cigarette, and he knows smoking cigarette is not good. He tried to quit smoking but always failed. And, alcohol makes people being crazy. If we go out weekend in downtown, we can see many drunken crazy people. I pretty much sure they would commit crimes 100times more than people who smokes just marijuana.

Also, government can make money from marijuana. This is because they can charge a lot of tax to marijuana like as they do to alcohol or cigarette. Also, Korea has nice soil and weather to plant marijuana. Other than just regulate marijuana, Korean government can use it or make it business since marijuana can be used as medicine, fabric, and even paper. For example, in order to buy marijuana under the table in Korea, people have to pay a lot of money because it is illegal. So, even though Korean government charges a lot of tax, they would buy. Also, if it becomes legal, it is easier to control abusing from teenager or overusing.

To sum up, keeping marijuana illegal does not make sense to me. I guess it is because of pressure of cigarette and alcohol companies. I hope marijuana can be legal one day soon.

GMO

It is often said that GMO is dangerous and people should stop making GMO. However, I think GMO is fine to produce for these reasons; it can solve a food shortage in developing countries. Also, it is not scientifically proved that GMO is harmful to a human body.

To begin with, GMO can be used for helping poor countries. This is because people can produce a lot of crops with small amount of money using genetically modified organisms process. So, they help poor countries or poor people with giving surplus food, or developing countries can learn how to make GMO and use this process for themselves. For example, in supermarkets, GMO food is usually cheaper than general food. So, with same money, I can buy more food if I choose GMO products.

Also, GMO products are not that much dangerous. This is because any of scientists have not demonstrated yet that GOM directly causes side effects to human bodies. In addition, nobody has died yet because of the side effect of GMO. According to a study conducted by Korean government, GMO food is not really related with average human life span.

To sum up, GMO is okay to use since there is no proof that GMO is harmful. Also, as technology is getting developed fast, there will be better GMO system, in the future, which might solve all doubts against GMO.

Co-growth between large and small corp.

Recently, there is big news, in our society not only in Korea, but also in the world, which is the protest against the power of capitalist “Occupy Wall Street!”.  This shows one of big side effect of capitalism. The main concern of Capitalism might be how to do a fair distribution. Most people said that Government should discriminate between large corp. and small corp. in benefits and taxes. However, I think this is not a best idea to solve this problem. To enhance competiveness of small company, consumers should help them and government should watch illegal behavior of large company.

To begin with, consumers should be more interested in this circumstance, and they should have more knowledge about economics. This is because if consumers do not buy products from a large company, they are not going to extend their business anymore. For example, when I was in Brooklyn, USA, I saw many young people who concern about better consuming for healthy economics. They had a campaign that tells about people should use local business for growth of local economics. People did not go to franchise restaurants, and they tried to use just local restaurants. In the result of that, there was almost no franchise chain restaurant.

Also, government should be strict in the application of rule. Sometimes, government forgives illegalness of large company because of risk of collapse of national economics. For instance, CEO of Samsung, Gunhee Lee, committed a lot of crimes such as bribe to prosecution, speculation, and fraud, but government gave him a pardon.

Selling OTC in the convenience store

It is often said that the medicine should not sold at convenience store. However, I think convenience store should sell non-prescription drug for these two reasons; it gives more convenient for people to get medicine which they need, and selling medicine in the store is not the reason that causes side effects of abusing medicine.

To begin with, selling medicine in the store gives faster access for people to get the medicine. This is because most pharmacies usually close early and it is not located everywhere especially in country side. For example, when I traveled local area in Korea, I got a digest problem because of ingesting too much food. I just needed a digestive, but the convenience store near at me did not sell it. So, I had to take a bus and had to go to the downtown to get that medicine. I felt really inconvenience.

Second, buying non-prescription medicine in convenience store does not affect to increase the rate of side effect caused by non-prescription medicine. This is because people already can buy non-prescription medicine in pharmacies. If there is a problem, non-prescription medicine should not be sold even in the pharmacy. According to research conducted by USA and Korean government, the rate of side effects by abusing the medicine has been increased in the past couple years. USA sells OTC in stores but Korea does not. This result shows that selling in convenience store is not really related to causing side effects.

To sum up, I think stores should sell the medicine for people’s convenience. However, there is still some points in that we should be careful. Abusing non-prescription medicine is still dangerous problem. So, before the government stats this new policy, they should make more regulations, that can prevent abusing medicine, such as restricting buying age and limiting the amount of medicine that people can buy one time.
